At the Rockwood JKA we learn traditional “Shotokan” karate. This is a Japanese form of the style used through the ages to improve body, mind and spirit. Shotokan karate originated in Okinawa, and was founded by the late Master Gichin Funakoshi, which later developed into the Japan Karate Association (JKA) style that we practise today. This form of karate is very old fashioned and traditional, maintaining many of the original Japanese values and practises as originally shared so many years ago. When practised accordingly, belts and medals are of no concern; but self discipline in consistent, dedicated training, and respect for others shown through active, diligent participation are of the utmost importance. One must endeavour to find the best parts of themselves through rigorous persistent training, therefore challenging and pushing the boundaries of one’s own capabilities to come to a better place -a place previously believed to be “unattainable”. This is how karate can prove that anything is possible, with the correct frame of mind.
